Autonomous Vehicle Engineer

Teach cars, trucks and delivery robots to see the road and drive themselves safely

💡 Why it matters: Self-driving cars, trucks and delivery robots could make roads safer and moving goods cheaper, but only if they are tested to a very high standard. Engineers who combine software, sensors and safety thinking are needed to get them right.

🗺️ Your path to this career

  1. 1Get strong at maths and physics, and learn to code
  2. 2Build small robots or simulated cars that follow lines, avoid obstacles or park
  3. 3Study computer science, engineering, robotics or maths
  4. 4Join a robotics team, internship or co-op placement working with sensors and real vehicles
  5. 5Start as a junior engineer, then specialise in seeing, planning or safety

⏰ A day in the life

Overnight, a test car stopped for a plastic bag blowing across the road. You replay the sensor recordings, find why the software thought it was a person, and adjust the code. Then you check the fix in simulation before it goes out on the track.
